No where near the end....but baby is on the brain....and place of birth is on my brain....
Something is going on with our Manitoba midwives, and I don't know what it is. Yes, it is evident that there is a MAJOR shortage and everyone knows it. But there are many midwives waiting, ready to pay for the Manitoba licensing exam (with Midwifery training from other countries)....but something has it all on hold!?
I have heard that BC controls MB midwifery licensing - I don't know anything of course - I'm just a client who catches 3rd party gossip.
(From our 3rd homebirth, Elousia's birth)
Something is up! I wonder....clients of midwives generally are cost saving on the medical system. Less cesareans happen, less drugs, less intervention, and even less days in the hospital = lower costs. BUT does the medical system want that? As life saving as the medical system is, anyone who has done their research also knows that it is also a business!

Two of my friends who each have had 4 or more homebirths in manitoba were recently refused midwifery care. This is unbelievable. One chose unassisted.
I am baffled. I was always under the understanding that clients whose plan was to have baby at home, were first priority. I'm sorry if this sounds unkind to those who've chosen hospital. It's definitely not meant to be. Home or hospital, folks choose for the same reason, fear, faith, comfort zone, beliefs. "You are brave to have your baby at home!" and "You are brave to have your baby in the hospital!"
The thing is, with the midwifery shortage, there will be a rise in private midwifery and it is already starting. It's almost as hard to find one of these as it is raw milk :)
I know it is a rude suggestion that there is some conspiracy, some high power in the medical system trying to squash out midwifery. But in the possible attempts to do this, it's just forcing some to choose unassisted. In a Saskatchewan community where the Cesarean rate is 80% (absolutely abominable) - *I am not against Cesareans in emergency - they save women and baby's lives every day*. I am against unnecessary, control that some medical staff have used and abused in the case of an 80% rate in one town! Research indicates a link between a woman's birth experiences and postpartum depression. Isn't it something that the medicalization of birth is relatively new in our history? *Again I'm more than aware that this has saved lives. I do wonder if it's a pretty equal statistic that they have also caused as much unnecessary intervention?
It's not that often, in recent years, that I use my blog to vent - and so in that case, I am so sorry!
We, mothers, are looking for answers. We are responsible mothers, trying to choose what's best for our families, our babies and ourselves.

Wow, so sorry to hear this. It sounds no different than the sorts of things that happen in the US, as well. I get upset about government interference and such. I hope you're able to do what you want to do.
ReplyDeleteAnd PS...Israel is so big! When I first started reading your blog, you were expecting him!
Thanks Harleygirl!
DeleteYes, Israel does feel big, even tho the photo of Israel is a little outdated, he looks pretty much the same. He is actually only around 18-19 lbs. weighing the less than some 5-6 month olds I know. But all our children are like that, lol!
I feel grateful that I have had no problems getting my midwife each time (this will be the fifth birth with her). I know these Manitoba midwives are taking on more clients than they ever wanted to. Apparently they are encouraging births at the birth centre because the clients are going into labour back to back. In Ontario we had a group called the Ontario Midwifery Consumer Network that worked to not only educate the public and promote midwifery but also to lobby the government for funding and any other issues to help get more midwifery care for women. I think Ontario is well on it's way with new midwives being liscenced every year. Manitoba is in a stage of growing pains and I think it is very frustrating to everyone involved. We really need to just hope and pray (and maybe more) for things to fall into place as far as funding from government and a willing group of health care professionals including midwives to smooth out the wrinkles in the new midwifery education program.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Shannon!
DeleteYou are right, so far you and I have been very blessed. Of course this time around I feel like my birth plans are all held in a balance.
My friend Kate (who I've often talked about to you), her daughter-in-law is going to take a course in the states at Ina May Gaskin's farm, Midwife Assistant. When you think of all the support staff that doctors have, it's interesting that we don't have any other staff to assist midwives, thus far that I know of, in our province.
The birth center is a great alternative to home.
I received a message from my friend Beatrice after she read this blog post. She gave me permission to copy and paste some of her remarks. As I know some folks find the comments section of blogs just as interesting if not more interesting than the blog itself :)
ReplyDelete" Its sad but something is going on with the midwives. I have a friend who had a midwife and she called to get her again and was refused..how weird and disappointing. I hope this whole midwife situation turns around for our province soon. If a woman wants a midwife, she should have the right to get one..... I have been to 8 births and only 1 of them was a home birth but the home birth one was the most rewarding..it was so peaceful. You are welcome to copy and paste some of my sentences, I get that a lot too where people get very defensive about birth. I just like to let women know that there are other options out there and its normal to explore other options. It doesn't make you a bad mom if you want a hospital birth and it doesn't make you a bad mom if you want a home birth I had a c-section with (1st baby) and a VBAC with (2nd baby). I learned a lot from both births but I found after 2nd baby's birth I was happier and more at peace (with 1st baby I had bad postpartum cause I didn't get the opportunity to release those love hormones-I still loved 1st baby with all my heart but it was different)."
I know that ill be the minority here, but I chose an OBGYN and I had a 9 month wait to get in with him (btw, after becoming a medical doctor, my OBGYN trained with a midwife! He's a pretty amazing guy!). This wait was before I was even pregnant, before he could test me to find out why we couldnt get pregnant, it was after years of heartache, so believe me when I say that the wait was painful. I guess what im saying is that the wait for a doctor/midwife/someone im a medical type field seems to be long across the board. I have many friends who didn't get a midwife, but also many friends who didn't get the doctor that they wanted either. There also seems to be a doula shortage. Im not sure what's going on here.. :(
ReplyDelete80%!?!!! Foolishness! I have had all my babies at the hospital but under the care of a midwife. I'd love to one day have a home birth but due to my thyroid dissease, my history of hemorage, and how far away we are from fast help, we haven't made that jump yet. BUT, I am in FULL support of home birth (and a bit jealous of those like you who can do it). Felicity didn't tolerate labor from minute one. When things got really bad the midwife, by law, had to call in the OB. Well, it was some early hour in the morning so he came right in and of course just wanted to wheel us away to a C. As he was talking to me, I told him I needed to push. He was obviously annoyed with me and basically told me that if I was going to "choose" to push her out, he was going to suck her out with the vacuum. As he prepped the vacuum my midwife whispered in my ear to push as hard as I could with and without contractions. With her as my support, I got Lissy out before that dang OB could set up his vacuum. Never have I been so thankful to be under a midwife's care who knew me, knew how I birthed, and actually gave a dang about me. Felicity needed a bit of oxygen upon arrival but was fine. She'd had her cord wrapped around her neck. Point to this story is that I just think that OB was annoyed to have been called in early in the morning and if he was there, he might as well make a nice paycheck and do a C section. Why else would he not even suggest letting me try to push?! It wasn't even my first baby! Right now, in our community, I feel there is a "pro birth" movement and its very exciting. Lots of doulas being trained (I'm hoping to be one of them one day), a new free standing birth center, and lots more home births. I hope such a trend will be able to come to your area soon. Sounds like a great % of the women there need it! Ok, sorry for the book. I love birth.
ReplyDeleteHi PJ,
ReplyDeleteWhile I haven't needed a mid-wife in a while, I thought I'd say hi. And I'd like to be the temporary mid-wife of this blog, prompting you to give birth to some new posts with my inquiry into what you're up to and how you're doing! Think of you often and fondly.
Tammy
Yup - our large area (with HIGH demand for Midwives) only has 2 midwives in the practice right now - and only one of them is full-time. They aren't even "offering" homebirth right now - which, to someone who had a less-than-great hospital birth experience, is a terrifying idea.
ReplyDeletePatty-Jean, would you e-mail me at chantal.moir at gmail dot com, please? I have a question for you, and I couldn't find any contact info here. Thanks! :)
