Sigh..............
I guess in many cases this would be the time of year when the school year is gathering a coming to a close. In our case we are probably only about half way through. We will continue to go at our laid back pace through the summer.
Oh, we shall take breaks - but honestly and whole two months of summer with young children and NO PLAN just seems to be a recipe for C H A O S!!!
We began to take a "Waldorf" approach one. By the time we started Gr. 2 officially, it was late fall 2011, and that's when baby number four arrived.
So, the juggling-dancing-act continued with schooling a creative, out-of-the-box-thinker 7 year old girl, pre-schooling 2 pre-schoolers, and caring for a newborn....we dance....not always so gracefully at times.
I want for my children to love learning....I want them to love natural things....to be filled with Awe and wonder at Creation and a Creative God....I want them to know that they themselves are powerful and can change the world for the better...that they are created in the image of a Creative God....I want them to know how to create with their hands....heal with green growing herbs....prepare wholefoods....This is some of the heartbeat of our homeschool.
Thank-you to Kristen, Allyson and Christy for inviting me to guest post this month! It was an honor and a privilege...as you can see I am a little more visual at communicating than I am at articulating through words...
The beauty in homeschooling, many homeschoolers will agree, is schooling Where Ever We Are...Life is the best school!

Life truly is the best school. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts as a guest TIPster. I just pinned your post.
ReplyDeleteThank-you Allyson!
DeleteYes! Life is learning, truly.
ReplyDeleteVery good PJ. I will certainly pick your brain for more ideas on creative teaching with Graeme coming up to pre-school. He thinks different than I do in so many ways. How do you include your pre-schoolers?
ReplyDeleteHi ya Donna darling! I'm learning as much as my kids are in this...keep trying a little of this and a little of that....So far, E and J like to tag along...when S does copy work they take their colouring time seriously...or when S and J are drawing their pics from Listinging prayer, E joins in along. When S reads to me, I set up some sort of special toy/activity for E.
DeleteBut this dance evolves and changes so some things that use to work, don't anymore, and then we try new things.
I truly could have written ALL these words! Well, except the healing through herbs part, but only b/c I haven't learned much on that myself yet. BUT, I just planted an herb garden yesterday so let the lessons begin! Anyways, we too will school thru the Summer. Honestly, its so blasting hot here in the Summer that we can rarely stay out in the heat past 10:30am. So I'm hoping to actually get a lot of schooling done in the Summer (when we are locked inside with the AC), and then take much of October off when baby arrives. We still won't be done for the year then though as we basically re-started the 1st grade year in Jan. I'm trying not to think or care about that much though.
ReplyDeleteThat heat sounds pretty amazing....And I understand about the 'trying not to think or care' about starting late...I fret at times. Then I look at some of my completely-unschooler homeschooing friends and their children are pretty sharp...So I dunno.
DeleteIn the last few years we have had a huge migration of African refugees in our city...many of these children have had little or no school....some go into bridge programs and catch up within a year or so...interesting.
I think just from your pictures that you're doing a great job schooling. We are nearly done here--we have just a little over a week left. BUT...thankfully our baby is due in the summer, so I didn't have to slow down our schooling for it. I'm sure that would have put me behind, too! I did some studies on "Little House In The Big Woods" and thought of you (I remembered your birthday photos), so if you would like to see those, they're in my blog. I think you've got it right--do what you can, when you can and all the while teach your children the basics of life that are missing from so many families today. I enjoy seeing what you're doing for school. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Harleygirl, I'm heading over to your blog in just a minute...that sounds like so much fun! And WOW nearly done, super mom! I do love anything 'little house'...we just started "the five little peppers"...so far the wording is old and interesting...we'll see how it goes!
