finger paints, and modeling clay

After somewhat recuperating after a week at Prov. Arts Camp, and a mini tour with Kev Wood, and some of the Dustkickers...i'm getting back up and other than the camping trips we are planning for this wknd and the next - Selah and i and Emma (friend to Selah and little gal i'm babysittn') are going to explore some of the below creations!!!! ok perhaps i am a little more excited than they are!

Cornstarch Clay
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups salt
1 1/3 cups cold water

Put salt and 2/3 cup water into a pan and bring to a boil. Mix the cornstarch with 2/3 cup water and stir well.
Add this mixture to the first and knead into a clay. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. While working with a project it is a good idea to pinch off only as much as you need and keep the rest in a closed bag because it tends to dry out fast.
Air dry your finished piece, checking it periodicaly. You may paint your piece once it's dry.

Finger Paints!
1/2 cup of flour
2 cups of water
food coloring
Mix the flour with a little water, stirring out the lumps. When smooth, slowly stir in the rest of the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture gets thick and shiny. Pour some of the mixture into small containers (yogurt or baby food work well). Stir in the drops of food coloring until the paint is bright and the color you want. Let cool.Salt can be sprinkled into the wet paint to create a sparkling effect when dry. Use this technique on dark-colored paper for snow scenes dry.

  1. What fun! My mom used to make homemade "playdoh" for us all the time when we were kids. Selah is lucky to have you for a mom!

PS. You spelled my name wrong in your link to my blog

  2. I sometimes get more excited than my kids too! I think it's good that we haven't lost OUR sence of wonder, after growing up and becoming
    Mommies!
We've made this playdoh for school a few times it's fun to do and to play with. I hope it's a blast for you too!

  3. Hi! I'm a fellow AR mama and saw our blog today. Well, I just "made" the cornstarch clay recipe you have here, and it's like water! I checked and rechecked the ingredients and intstructions and it's still watery.

Any suggestions? lol I was realy excited to actually have all the inerdients on hand for this, as I rarely have what is needed on hand for homemade craft "stuff" : )

    thanks!
